Project Pigeon

[insertspace] is proud to present Project Pigeon by Alex Lockett and Ian England at The Rea Garden.

Throughout the summer of 2009, Lockett & England kept pigeons at The Rea Garden. A number of events took place at the pigeon loft between June and September, with regular pigeon liberations happening in locations around the country. The loft was open each weekend for visitors to see the pigeons  and chat to the artists about their experiences.

On 27th August 2009 an exhibition featuring work by Lisa Cheung, Tom Dale, Ole Hagen, Ming de Nasty, Lindsey Seers, and Simon Woolham took place at the loft. Lockett and England took their pigeons to the artists, who inserted specially made artworks in the pigeon’s message carriers. Each artist was left with instructions explaining how to look after the birds, attach the artwork, and given a release time. Back in Digbeth, the audience watched as the exhibition was constructed as each pigeon returned to the loft. In a day-at-the-races style event, audience members entered a sweep stake on the fastest pigeon, watching the birds’ journey on GPS.

Project Pigeon will continue to reside at The Rea Garden until September 2010. Together with film maker/photographer Chris Keenan they will be making a film documenting all aspects of pigeon keeping such as raising birds, training, club meetings and racing etc. Whilst at The Rea Garden, they will be hosting a range of events, including a Pigeon Club and film screenings. The loft will continue to be open each Friday where Ian will be on site to show visitors the birds and discuss their project and pigeon keeping in more detail.
